85. What makes a marriage work?

Me and the fiancé had an interesting conversation the other day.
He mentioned an article he read online, aaaand it goes something like this:
'Apparently there was this marriage counsellor, who wrote an article.. she said that nowadays the reason divorces are more frequent is due to the fact that women now are more independent compared to the olden days. Before this, women would stay at home, cook, do chores, have kids, looks after the kids, whilst the men would go out and find ways to make money. Men would be the one who cheat. Because they can. Women were more dependent on men.
'But now, women are equally as successful, if not even more. Not all women stay at home, cook, do chores. Many women opt not to have kids. They find their own way to make money. Women are the one with the power to cheat.
'In the counselling sessions, the men had adopted more feminine traits, and the women adopted a more masculine trait. The men would be the one breaking down, crying. Whilst the women would admit, on their part, that they had cheated on their spouses. So in a way, society had switch roles,' he concluded, driving nonchalantly down Tol Sungai Besi.
'Okay, b, what is your point?' I asked.
'There is no point. Just sharing with you,' he replied.
Gender inequality or equality?

When I thought about it, it's quite true. Women are so successful now! We are so driven and determined to forge our own career paths. And wow, my heart is full of pride to hear many females doing so well. Vivy Yusof from ProudDuck.com, Malaysia's own entrepreneur who successfully launched an online fashions store. Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCO, the second largest food and beverage business in the world by net revenue. Beyonce. Oprah. Kimora Lee Simmons. Powerful, strong women.

Sometimes, I am scared at my own determination to make my own way in the world that I tend to say yes to every opportunity I get to expand my name.

But maybe... along the way, some career women (not these mega women) got caught up in the thrill of the chase. The adrenaline. It's fine when you start dating that you experience butterflies in your stomach. When you fret for hours about what you are suppose to wear on a date. When you're so comfortable with someone, you tend to forget about dressing up. Out comes the sweats, the hoodies. Letting him see you barefaced is okay. So maybe that is when the sizzle fizzles out.

BUT! When someone else woos you, you melt and immediately that's when the relationship is in troubled waters. That is when you forget about what you and your partner for life has gone through. Instead, you start having feelings for someone who is feeding you what you have felt before.

I don't think you get married, have kids, live old together and that's it. I think a marriage is hard work. I've witnessed many people who are married, and the love just disappears after X amount of years. All the imperfections are easy to see, easy to pick out, you begin to find his quirkiness annoying. All his flaws irritate you to no end.

So, in a marriage, I think there should always be a balance between partners. But the best thing is, to never let a marriage become routine. Yes it's nice to watch Walking Dead marathons. Go for brunch. Attend weddings together. Read books together. But the key is you need to always add spice and surprises. A vacation. A date. A movie. Reading interesting articles to each other, even if the other party is yawning away. A walk in the park. Roses. Chocolates. Special, er, nights. I think many people have emphasized on how sex is an important part of marriage. Hopefully, when someone reads this, he/she realizes that I love white and pink roses ahem. With God's will, may our union be blessed and full of good surprises!

This post is a tribute to my favourite Hollywood couple, BRANGELINA, WHO FINALLY WHO TIED THE FREAKING KNOT! I still love you Angelina even though you're a homewrecker. Ho!

79. #kimye

Can I just say, even though pelamin is just temporary, this is the most elegant, simple, and sweetest pelamin I've ever seen, and looking at this picture, it's gonna be in all the pictures for all ages, for your kids, grandkids, etc to see. The dress is also very elegant and sweet on her. I love it, it's just flowers, none of that garden fence, styrofoam, foam thingymabobs. Simple and sweet.

Mana Faiz (my pelamin designer) ni? Haha.

70. engagement!

Apologies for the late blog post :) It has been a very busy and hectic past few months, and I hope to keep updating frequently now so I can look back from the future and chronicle my journey... towards becoming a future wife :) That's right! I was engaged on fourth January, 2014 :)

As of now, I am someone's fiancĂ©e. I will post soon about the process, from merisik, to engagement, and to the future wedding plans. Pretty much everything up to now has been diy, and with the good grace and help of my family and friends :) Will post pictures and my journey for this beautiful chapter of my life one by one.

All I can say is it took me twenty five years to finally find a man I can hopefully look on to, to lead me physically, spiritually, and emotionally. In return, I hope to be his crutch for the rest of our lives together. He is my best friend, my confidante, my joy, my everything. I am so excited to be embarking on this journey to tie our union together. As for now, here's a picture of me and my fiancee :)

56. of weddings #SueShen

Back in 2011 when I was working in Nuffnang's sister agency, Churp Churp, a new girl named Sue came in. She wasn't really shy, she was extroverted and loud and do-as-I-damn-well-please attitude. We had lunch together in a clique a lot - it was me, Farah, Sue, Thara, and on-off Anne.

Ini crazy bunch at Nuffnang/ Churp Churp.

When she was working in Nuffnang, she was still going out with some new guy every other day and playing the "keep it cool" card. I thought to myself, man, this girl is pretty bad ass when it came to guys. When I left the company, we didn't meet for a long time, until one Thara invited me for a catch up dinner because Farah was leaving for Scotland. That sparked off the dinner at random places and shisha sessions.

Suddenly, this guy called Shen came along to one of our lepak sessions... And when I first met him I said to myself, "ohhhkayyy another one of Sue's ahem ahem". But again and again, and againnnn, he was there. Very chill, calm guy. Didn't really talk much to him haha. Then Sue told us, "babe, I'm getting married!" WTF. And she asked us, "can you guys be my bridesmaid?" So honored.

Was at this meet up that Sue told us.

We shisha-ed more after the announcement, and she passed us kain to wear for her wedding. Slowly, I got to know her fiancee more, throughout more shisha sessions. The months drew closer, and finally, one weekend came where it was her wedding reception (in Perak)!

Sue looked unbelievably stunning. As we saw them both walk down the aisle, you knew that love was in the air, and no two people suited each other better.

The next weekend was the reception in Penang, so me and him took the four hour drive up to Penang. It was a beautiful, outdoor wedding, right next to the beach. To everyone's horror, the evening was clouded by hevay rain, but it didn't dampen anyone's spirits. This is exactly how I imagine my wedding to be (although we could do without the rain).
Here's to #SueShen, may the happy couple embark on a beautiful journey and begin the rest of their lives as husband and wives :) You can now ber-SUEKAHATIHAHA now with your hubby!

42. bridesmaid

One of my girls, Sue, is engaged, and her wedding will be in Ipoh and Penang on respective weekends in June, and I was honored when she asked me to be a bridesmaid, yay!

As is customary for Malay weddings, the bride-to-be usually gives fabrics to her bridesmaid, which the bridesmaid will tailor to her own liking, based on Malaysia's traditional costume of baju kurung, to wear during the wedding for the brides' side. She gave me two gorgeous fabrics; one is purple, the other is purple with zebra stripes.

Some of my inspirations are the following (I love Mimpikita, it's like saccharine-sweet):-

I love the cutting on the far right. The hourglass shape is perfect. Peplum cuts is also good for my figure, but most of the girls are already planning for peplum-type dresses so I want to stand out a little.

I also love the cutting on the far right. The beige + mint green is too gorgeous.

I love this cut Juliana Evans wore. The pastel colors are so sweet on her, along with the sequinned sleeves. But I have a feeling the pleated neckline won't flatter me cause I have booooobs.

Can't wait to see the final piece hehe :)

every morning you're the reason i get out of bed.

I love just being surrounded by people I love. Him, good company, good food and shisha is what makes me content nowadays. After sunset, it is all I look for.t

HOLY BATMAN shitloads of pictures.

It's a bit of a heavy post; there are well over 400 photos of my cousin's wedding but I managed to minimize it to 40+ photos. Most of the pictures are taken by me, except the pictures where I am in it (durr).

FRIDAY NOON

The bride and groom thingy on the cake.

Me fanning the bride. It was farking hot to say the least. This is when relatives and family shake some leaves and stuff all over the bride and groom, something to usher in good luck. (I think).

PREPARATION ON SATURDAY MORNING

I woke up on Saturday morning at 6 am and it was already busy. My aunt was shooing me out of my bed, telling me to vacumn the house, to dry the mugs, rearrange the carpet. The menial tasks handed out to me.

OMG this kid had the most pottiest mouth ever. She went up to a rather chubby kid (around 5 - 6 years old and said: weh weh you should really diet you're so fat and ran away).

Some random baby who drooled all over my camera when I took him from his mom. So cuteee!

Then I had to leave back for uni because I had a final exam for a course the next day (public opinion - by the way, supahhh sucked at it. 2 hours is not enough for a 3 part essay paper, first of which is divided into 10 questions!). Much sleep deprived now, and I have a German oral test tomorrow, bla blaa. This is the week of assignments, much!

Being at the wedding made me all sentimental - I started thinking about what I wanted at my own wedding. When I started telling my boyfriend about this, he clapped his ears with his hands and refused to look at me =/
